I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love this authors writing style and this book did not disappoint! If you love the suspense of horror tales you are going to love this one. The pages of this book virtually drip with it. The vision he paints with words set the stage for this story to play out. The story gripped me from start to finish. I was there rooting for the characters survival against horrific odds. There are many twists and turns and violent action scenes with some pretty surprising out comes. There was definitely a finish to this book, but I can see where there he could possibly write a sequel if he chose too. It's complete as is, but I would love to read more of this story's universe. This is a good job by the author. This story is well written and is the first in many years to get the heart pumping due to the tension built up. The characters are engaging, the plot is interesting and the 'big baddie' will be frightful to many people. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I almost stopped reading this book because the repetition of developing characters just to kill them off became tiresome after awhile. Another weakness was the lack of any explanation regarding the nature and origin of this evil the ISIS type terrorists manage to so easily unleash on us. And, even in a monsoon, the apparent disappearance of thousands of people over just a few days from a major American city would never happen in a vacuum, without a rapid state and federal response. Airlines, the news media, the trucking industry -- all would veery quickly notice something was very wrong in Los Angeles. Yet I read the book to the end, hoping there eventually would be some explanations and something more than just another monster movie ending. I smell a sequel. If so, I'll pass.
I usually do not read horror stories, but once I started this book, I could not stop. It,s like a speeding train, carrying you along with greater and greater force, that you cannot stop. And the fierce horror catches you in its grip to the end. And let me tell you, there is no Hollywood ending. There is a whole new book waiting to be written.
I enjoyed this book. I thought author does a good job of pulling you into the rapidly deteriorating conditions of the city of Los Angeles. Had trouble putting the book down because I kept waiting for more. And this is where my criticism begins....where did the vampires come from? Like origins and facts. How did terrorists get their hands on them? Why is this book so similar to Robert Mcammon's book "They Thirst" ? I mean people it is almost the exact same plot. Anyway it is decent but just left too many questions
Having read the Extinction Point series I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into (no pun intended) The Darkening and I was not disappointed. It is a fast paced horror story, one which kept me tense as I turned the pages. Just when you think things couldn't get any worse, they do and you just have to keep on reading to see how it all will end. If you are into horror stories this one is a must read. I could hardly put it down!
I had to keep reading way past my bedtime! The characters were so well drawn I became immediately engaged and just had to know how they fared against the most horrid,savage creatures imaginable. And imagine them I did, the vivid descriptions, the evocative emotional journey, the fast moving action and the sheer suspense of it all...so intelligently and beautifully written. Bravo!
Always on the prowl for new authors in the horror genre, which is how I came across this novel by Paul Antony Jones. It's always a thrill to try out a new author although many times it can also be disappointing. Not so in this case. Although he has written quite a few novels before this one, "The Darkening" was my first exposure to Paul, and he certainly did not disappoint. The author's writing style is fluid and there's very little flowery language that would cause it to drag. The story begins in the Middle East where terrorists look to employ a new strategy against Westerners via an ancient evil that has been hidden away for thousands of years. The story immediately grabs you. It's one of those novels that grabs you and pulls you along rather than some novels that you must plod through. The mark of a good author is one who writes a story so well that you are pulled into the story so much that you almost forget that you're reading. And this story (and author) did just that. I don't want to give away too much of the story because this is one that should be experienced rather than summarized for others. Trust me - if you like your antagonists to be monsters of pure evil, you will enjoy this novel. Incredibly creepy at times as well as truly horrifying. I dislike how so many authors seem to write nothing but serialized offerings, but I truly hope there is another book in this author's future that will continue this story. A sequel is not necessary as this can stand alone, but there is room for a continuation and possibly even a further exploration of the backstory.
